Event Details

An evening of Caribbean cooking, food heritage and shared stories, marking sixty years of Notting Hill Carnival

Food carries memory. Every dish at this 4-course supper holds a history of migration, survival and invention, foodways carried from West Africa across the Atlantic and reshaped in the islands. Join Chef Zara of Goûté Bon for an evening where Caribbean cooking meets oral history, and the plate becomes a way to tell the story of a people. The name Goûté Bon is Kwéyòl for “tastes good,” a nod to the Dominican Creole heritage at the heart of Zara’s cooking.

This is more than a meal. Across the evening you will hear a Caribbean food heritage talk that follows the ingredients themselves: where they came from, how they crossed the Atlantic and how they were reshaped in island kitchens. We trace the Indigenous Kalinago, African and European threads woven through Creole cooking, and how those traditions travelled with the Windrush generation into the kitchens and front rooms of Notting Hill, feeding the community that built Carnival.

This is a multigenerational supper. We sit together, eat together and hear from elders who share their memories, their food histories and their recollections of Carnival. Guests of all ages are invited to ask questions, share their own stories and connect across generations.

The Caribbean Heritage Supper runs alongside the African Heritage Supper on Saturday 1 August. Together the two evenings explore the deep connections between the Caribbean diaspora and the African continent that shaped it.
