Barbados’ Crop Over festival will officially get underway this weekend with the highly anticipated Opening Gala and Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes, taking place on Saturday, July 4 at Queen’s Park.
The event, held in association with Barbados Light & Power Limited, celebrates one of the island’s most cherished traditions, signalling the start of the “Sweetest Summer Festival.” Activities begin from 2pm, with a vibrant programme of cultural workshops, live demonstrations, heritage displays, artisan villages, food experiences and family-friendly entertainment set to transform the venue into a hub of Bajan culture.
The formal ceremony is scheduled for 4pm, followed by a major concert commemorating 60 years of Bajan calypso. The showcase will feature several artists who have helped shape the genre’s sound and legacy across generations.
With free admission, organisers invite locals and visitors alike to take part in the tradition that marks the official opening of Crop Over.
