The Ricardo Barriteau Drue Foundation was officially launched on Tuesday 2 July 2024, in honour of the late soca artist Ricardo Drue. In mid-July last year, Their Excellencies Sir Rodney and Lady Williams, under the patronage of the Halo Foundation, formally endorsed its existence, recognising it as a noteworthy foundation. Sir Rodney Williams commended the foundation’s mission and commitment to nurturing young artists while preserving Ricardo’s legacy, passion for music, and dedication to uplifting emerging talent during his lifetime.
The foundation aims to support young and aspiring musicians by providing mentorship, opportunities, and recognition for their contributions to the arts.
One of its notable initiatives is the Bright Spark Award, which seeks to honour Antigua’s incredible musical talents, creative excellence, and cultural legacy. At the National Music Awards on Wednesday 5 February, rising Soca star Taeco ‘Psycho’ Ogarro was a recipient of the Bright Spark Award, which was presented to him by Ricardo’s mother and brother.
Ricardo Drue passed away on Tuesday 12 December 2023. Through the foundation, his family will continue to celebrate his impact on the soca music industry, ensuring that his legacy lives on in the works they carry out in his honour and as a support to the Caribbean music community.
