Tributes as Tobago soca star Oscar B dies at 57

|

Released Date

Tobago soca singer Oscar Dennis Benjamin, better known as Oscar B, died on Sunday 28 June, at the age of 57 from complications related to a stroke he suffered in May.

His death came on the same day a benefit concert was scheduled to take place at the Shaw Park Cultural Complex in Tobago to raise funds for his medical treatment. Instead, the event became a tribute to his life and career, bringing together fellow artists, friends and fans.

Born in Signal Hill, Tobago, Oscar B discovered his love for music while singing with the Signal Hill Alumni Choir. He later rose to prominence as lead vocalist for Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, performing across the Caribbean, North America and Europe.

Oscar B played a role in the growth of soca music in Jamaica during his time with the band. He recorded two of the group’s best-known hits with deejay Admiral Bailey: Soca Butterfly, which reached number one in 1994, and Soca Tatie, which topped the charts in 1995.

Days before his death, the Tobago House of Assembly approved funding to assist with his medical expenses. During the Assembly’s budget debate, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine announced the support and acknowledged Oscar B’s contribution to Caribbean music.

Following his death, the Division of Tourism, Antiquities and Creative Industries confirmed that the concert would proceed as a tribute to his life and contribution to Caribbean culture.

Over three decades, Oscar B became one of Tobago’s best-known soca performers. His music remained a fixture at carnivals and fêtes across the Caribbean, and his performances helped introduce soca to audiences beyond the region.
